The recent history of the Dinamo Saint Petersburg ice hockey club began in 2013. Back then, the teams were founded at Boarding school No. 576 and the “Dinamo” Specialized Children and Youth School of the Olympic Reserve to participate in the Junior and Women's Hockey League (JHL and WHL) championships.
In 2016, the club announced the establishment and assembling of the team for participating in the Supreme Hockey League (SHL) championship. The team was formed on the basis of the junior team which had become the bronze medalist of the JHL championship in the 2015–2016 season.
The first ice hockey derby match in the history of St. Petersburg, which was played between Dinamo Saint Petersburg and SKA-Neva at the Yubileiny sports complex on November 20, 2016, was already attended by more than 9,000 spectators.
The most resounding success came to the Dinamo players in the 2017–2018 season. The team by a large margin won the regular SHL championship, thus taking the title of Russian Champion, and became the winner of the Petrov Cup in the play-off by defeating SKA-Neva in the final match by a score of 4–2 in the series.
In the 2021–2022 season, the Dinamo players were a footstep away from repeating their success and getting a trophy, but the team lost to Rubin Tyumen in the final play-off series.

As of today, the club comprises four teams:
- Dinamo Saint Petersburg (playing in the SHL);
- JHC Dinamo Saint Petersburg (playing in the JHL);
- Dinamo-Neva women's team (playing in the WHL);
- Dinamo-Junior team (playing in the National Junior Hockey League (NJHL)).
It is important that all teams of the club rely on their own trainees. Some of them have already made a debut in various teams of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL).
