Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi gas pipeline
Gas comes to Sochi
Centralized supply of natural gas to apartments and households is a common practice that millions of Russians take for granted. However, in some regions of our country natural gas remains a luxury for a select few. The Black Sea coast in the Krasnodar Territory was among those regions until recently.
Built over 35 years ago, the Maikop – Samurskaya – Sochi gas pipeline supplied natural gas only to some of the population centers on the Black Sea coast, while the rest had to buy expensive liquefied natural gas. The technical condition of the gas pipeline coupled with the complex engineering and geological settings along its route often caused accidents, leading to gas supply shortages.
In order to make gas supplies to the region more reliable and to provide gas to the sports venues built for the XXII Winter Olympic Games and XI Winter Paralympic Games, which were to be held in Sochi in 2014, the Russian Government made a decision to construct the Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi gas trunkline.
The construction of Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi started in 2009. Some 90 per cent of the pipeline was laid along the seabed of the Black Sea. The offshore route was chosen as the most eco-friendly option.
Natural gas has now become the fuel of today – instead of tomorrow – for people on the Black Sea coast in the Krasnodar Territory: on June 6, 2011, the Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi gas pipeline was brought onstream. The new trunkline helped radically transform the situation with respect to gas supplies on the Black Sea coast.
In January 2014, additional capacities were put in operation at the Krasnodarskaya compressor station, with the capacities of the Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi gas pipeline used to the full extent as a result.
Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi became a reliable gas supplier for sports venues in the host city of the Winter Olympics. The Adler TPP is the largest industrial gas consumer in the region. Natural gas conveyed via the new trunkline is used for heat and power generation.
The improvements with regard to gas and power supplies throughout the Black Sea coast contribute to the development of Sochi as a mountain resort. For instance, many health centers in Sochi can now operate all year, which attracts tourists in the autumn/winter periods and provides permanent jobs for locals.
At present, the new energy facilities – the Dzhubga – Lazarevskoye – Sochi gas pipeline and the Adler TPP – that were brought onstream before the Olympics are in normal operation.
