Historical flags of Russian Empire and USSR and State flag of Russian Federation raised in ceremony in St. Petersburg

RELEASE

The ceremony of raising the historical flags of the Russian Empire and the USSR, as well as the State flag of the Russian Federation was held today in St. Petersburg.

Taking part in the event was Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

The hoisting of flags is timed to celebrate the great historic dates marking each flag's establishment: 165 years of the Russian Empire flag, 100 years of the Red Banner and 330 years of Peter the Great's tricolor. The flags were hoisted as a sign of respect. Each of the flags is associated with different victories, accomplishments and heroic deeds, but their triunity symbolizes the single great history of our Motherland and the continuity of the national force and spirit maintained by the new generations of Russians.

The project was implemented by Gazprom. The flagpoles rising 179.5 meters above the water level on the coast of the Gulf of Finland became the world's first ensemble of three flagpoles of such height. The flags now form part of the historical park dedicated to the 300th Anniversary of St. Petersburg.
