New sports center opens in St. Petersburg under Gazprom for Children program

The opening ceremony for a new sports and health center built under the Gazprom for Children program took place today in the town of Metallostroy, Kolpinsky District of St. Petersburg.
The event was attended by Alexander Beglov, Governor of St. Petersburg, Vladimir Priymak, Director General of Gazprom's Fund for Supporting Social Initiatives, and official representatives of the city.
The sports and health center in Metallostroy is the first sports facility in the municipality where locals can practice ice sports all year round. The center is complete with an artificial ice rink measuring 30 by 60 meters which is ready for ice hockey, figure skating and mass ice skating events. The facility is also provided with several gyms and two swimming pools (one for adults and one for children). Required conditions are in place for people with disabilities. The center can accommodate up to 1,300 people a day.
Two new sports centers built under the Gazprom for Children program were also put into operation today in Petergof and in the Moskovsky District of St. Petersburg.
Background
Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom, is engaged in natural gas transmission in nine Russian regions, as well as natural gas transit within and beyond the FSU. The company operates over 11,000 kilometers of gas pipelines.
The company's facilities include 32 compressor shops with 192 gas compressor units, 245 gas distribution stations, as well as heat, electricity and water supply systems, communications, metrological and automation facilities. Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg has 18 branches, including 14 gas pipeline operation centers.
The Gazprom for Children program is the Company's largest social project. Since early 2007, over 1,600 modern sports facilities have been built across the country, including 120 sports and health centers. The program has a national scope. It covers 73 Russian regions. Today, these sports facilities are used by over 100,000 people. Taking into account the three new sports centers, the number of sports facilities built in St. Petersburg within the Company's social program has reached 37.
