New sports center opens in Tikhvin under Gazprom for Children program

The opening ceremony for a sports and health center built under the Gazprom for Children program took place today in Tikhvin.
The event was attended by Alexander Drozdenko, Governor of the Leningrad Region, Alexander Lazarevich, Head of the Tikhvinsky District and the Tikhvinsky urban settlement, Yury Naumov, Head of the Tikhvinsky District Administration, Alexey Kravchenko, Deputy Director General for Social Programs of Gazprom's Fund for Supporting Social Initiatives, and Sergey Kirillov, Director General of the Pikalyovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center of Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg.
The sports and health center in Tikhvin is outfitted with modern sports equipment for such team sports as futsal, basketball, volleyball, and badminton. The facility is also designed for physical training and health improving activities, including for people with limited mobility (wheelchair basketball, sitting volleyball).
The center also has a gym and two swimming pools (one for children and one for adults). Besides, a room for dry land swimming is provided for group and introductory exercises taken in preparation to sports swimming. The sports facility can accommodate over 550 people a day.
Background
Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom, is engaged in natural gas transmission in nine Russian regions, as well as natural gas transit within and beyond the FSU. The company operates over 11,000 kilometers of gas pipelines.
The company's facilities include 32 compressor shops with 192 gas compressor units, 245 gas distribution stations, as well as heat, electricity and water supply systems, communications, metrological and automation facilities. Gazprom Transgaz Saint Petersburg has 18 branches, including 14 gas pipeline operation centers.
The Gazprom for Children program is the Company's largest social project. Since early 2007, over 1,900 modern sports facilities have been built across the country, including more than 200 sports and health centers. The program covers 73 Russian regions. Today, these sports facilities are used by over 130,000 people. The total number of sports facilities constructed in the Leningrad Region under the Company's social program has reached 96.
