New sports center opens in Jewish Autonomous Region under Gazprom for Children program

The opening ceremony for a new sports and health center took place today in the town of Obluchye, Jewish Autonomous Region. The center equipped with a swimming pool was built under the Gazprom for Children program.

Attending the ceremony were Rostislav Goldstein, Governor of the Jewish Autonomous Region, Vladimir Dzhabarov, Senator of the Federation Council of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, Eduard Borisenkov, Head of the Land and Property Relations Directorate of Gazprom’s Fund for Supporting Social Initiatives, Ivan Bashunov, Director of the Khabarovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center of Gazprom Transgaz Tomsk, as well as federal, regional and local government officials.

“A modern sports facility has been created in Obluchye thanks to Gazprom and the help from the regional authorities,” said Rostislav Goldstein. “This is a big event not only for the town, but also for the entire region. It will go down in the history of local sports.”

“I would like to thank the regional administration for supporting Gazprom’s social initiatives and all those who were involved in the construction of the sports and health center for their work,” said Eduard Borisenkov. “I hope that it will become a wellness space, a major attraction for the residents of Obluchye.”

The sports and health center spans a total area of over 3,000 square meters and has two swimming pools, a room for dry land swimming exercises, and everything necessary for general physical training. The center is also accessible for people with limited mobility.

“The Gazprom for Children program enables the younger generation to engage in physical culture and sports activities on a whole new level,” said Ivan Bashunov, Director of the Khabarovskoye Gas Pipeline Operation Center of Gazprom Transgaz Tomsk. “We will keep track of the successes of our athletes at inter-regional and national competitions, and perhaps even at the Olympic Games. After all, there are numerous examples of famous champions who came from small villages.”

Since early 2007, over 1,900 modern sports facilities have been built across the country, including more than 200 sports and health centers. The program covers 73 Russian regions. Today, these sports facilities are used by over 130,000 people.

The town of Obluchye with a population of about 8,000 is located 159 kilometers away from Birobidzhan, the capital of the Jewish Autonomous Region.
