News from projects and regions
On October 16, Gazprom Dobycha Shelf Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk took part in the Save Our Forest nationwide campaign as a partner: more than 1,700 Siberian larch seedlings were purchased with the funds provided by the company. Its employees also got in on the act by planting several hundreds of young trees with their own hands. This year, the Save Our Forest campaign was held in the forest area hit by fires in 2002. The fires had caused major damage to the forests in the north of Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.
All in all, the initiative brought together around 60 people, including volunteers, students, employees of energy companies, and officials of regional and federal government entities and security services. The number of campaigners was limited due to COVID restrictions. Nevertheless, the regional forest reserves were replenished with over 3,000 larch trees through joint efforts.
“Traditionally, Gazprom Dobycha Shelf Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk has been supporting initiatives of this kind. Together with the Rodnik non-profit organization, we have been planting various species of trees within the city in the last few years. So when the forestry and hunting agency of the Sakhalin Region approached us to join the Save Our Forest campaign, we did not hesitate to become its partner,” noted Yulia Vlasenko, head of the company’s environmental protection division.
The Save Our Forest nationwide campaign is now in its third year. It is included in the list of measures undertaken within the framework of the Ecology national project. Each year, nearly 70 million trees are planted in Russia as part of this campaign, with more than 80,000 young plants set out on Sakhalin Island and the Kuril Islands.
