The opening ceremony for the Chaika (Seagull) sports and health center took place on October 28 in Nikolaevsk-on-Amur, Khabarovsk Territory. The center complete with an ice arena was built under the Gazprom for Children program.

Attending the ceremony were regional and local government officials, representatives of Gazprom's Fund for Supporting Social Initiatives, heads of the companies that were engaged in the construction of the sports and health center, as well as professional athletes and sports fans.

“Gazprom has made a gift not only to the town, but also to all northern areas of the Khabarovsk Territory. Nikolaevsk-on-Amur is now ready to welcome teams from neighboring locations for winter sports competitions,” said Anatoly Leonov, Head of the Nikolaevsky Municipal District.

The new sports and health center, spanning an area of over 4,000 square meters, has an artificial ice arena measuring 60 by 30 meters, a warm-up room, a trainer room, changing rooms, and utility rooms. The center allows for year-round hockey and figure skating activities. It can accommodate 150 people per shift.

The sports and health center is fitted out with cutting-edge sports and engineering equipment. An ice resurfacer and an ice edger were purchased to maintain the arena in good condition.

The building was constructed in parallel with the improvement of the adjacent outdoor area and installation of small-scale landscape architecture.

“Thanks to Gazprom's efforts and assistance from regional authorities, the locals of the northern areas of the Khabarovsk Territory have gained an opportunity to promote hockey, a sport that is so popular in our country, improve their health, and spend their free time joyfully and usefully,” said Nikolai Kuzmichev, Adviser to Director General of Gazprom's Fund for Supporting Social Initiatives.

It is planned to arrange classes for children attending sports schools and to conduct training sessions for local adult teams at this center. Besides, the skating rink is open to the general public free of charge.

The opening ceremony concluded with an exhibition show by the pupils of the Pirouette school of figure skating from Khabarovsk and a friendly match between the Nizhneamurets and Belye Volki hockey teams.
