Nord Stream 2 AG today received the construction permit for the Russian section of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. The permit was issued by the Russian Ministry of Construction, Housing and Utilities in line with the established procedure. Practical implementation of the project under the terms of the newly-issued permit will begin in the near future, with due consideration of the environmental aspects and the opinion of the State Environmental Expert Review.
“We are very pleased to have obtained this permit as a result of extensive and thorough teamwork during the comprehensive permitting process. The issuing of the construction permit for the Russian section marks an important milestone for the Nord Stream 2 project as a whole,” said Sergey Serdyukov, Chief Technical Officer at Nord Stream 2 AG.
In Russia, Nord Stream 2 needs to obtain two main permits. In addition to the permit issued today, a permit for the construction of underwater pipelines in the territorial sea of the Russian Federation is to be granted by the Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor). The permit is expected to be issued in the near future.
To date, all the necessary permits for the construction and operation of the planned pipeline were issued by Germany, Finland, and Sweden. The national permitting procedure is underway in Denmark.
Background
Nord Stream 2 is an international project for the construction of a gas pipeline across the Baltic Sea. The pipeline will provide reliable supplies of Russian natural gas to European consumers via the best possible route. Nord Stream 2 will largely follow the route and technical concept of the successful Nord Stream pipeline. The new gas pipeline will have the capacity of 55 billion cubic meters of gas per year, which will be sufficient to provide 26 million households with heat and electricity every year. Natural gas supplies will help lower CO2 emissions across the European Union, as well as create a more balanced energy mix with gas substituting for coal in power generation and providing back-up for intermittent renewables such as wind and solar power.
