Gazprom Sotsinvest experts planted 60 seedlings of rare trees including European chestnut (Castanea sativa Mill) and Oriental wild apple (Malus orientalis) in the highlands near the Kepsha settlement of Adler district, Sochi. This event falls within the comprehensive program for environmental measures taken while Olympic facilities construction.
“We replanted about 5,000 seedlings of rare trees in 2012, and during the whole period we have already planted and replanted more than 11,000 plants from construction sites, which exceeds our initial plans by about 10 per cent. Taking into consideration the work to be done in 2013, the number of plants and trees will reach 15,000,” Matvey Geller, Head of the Special Projects and Studies Division under the Information and Communications Department of Gazprom told us at the environmental event.
The environmental event took place under the Ecology and Sport slogan. Viktor Mamatov, two-time Olympic Champion, four-time World Champion, Vice President of the Russian Biathlon Union, Expert Council member of the Russian Ministry of Sport participated in the event as the guest of honor.
“It can be said that ecology and sport have similar goals and objectives. While large-scale development and promotion of sport leads to a healthy human lifestyle, ecology and nature conservation events, today’s included, is a way to a healthy lifestyle of our planet,” Viktor Mamatov noted.

Gazprom Sotsinvest is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom. The company is carrying out the construction of Olympic infrastructure facilities in Krasnaya Polyana near Sochi, namely, the Integrated Biathlon and Ski Complex, the Mountain Olympic Village, the second stage of Gazprom’s Mountain Tourist Center and is implementing projects for Gazprom on construction of several major facilities in Saint Petersburg, Central and Southern Russia.
