Fakel Gazproma faced the UMMC club in the final. The sportsmen competed against each other for the fourth time in 2012 (before the 2012 Gazprom European Super Cup tournament the teams met during Russia’s Championship, Russia’s Cup and European Champions League).
Vladimir Samsonov and Dmitry Ovcharov, both sportsmen from Fakel Gazproma, subsequently outran the Chinese legends from UMMC Tan Rui Wu and Hou Yingchao – the final score of each match was 3:0. Alexey Smirnov brought the third winning point to the Orenburg team by taking over Grigory Vlasov from Yekaterinburg.
Fakel Gazproma took all trophies in the European and Russian table tennis tournaments in 2012. The club won the title of Russia’s Championship for five times; Russia’s Cup – for three times and celebrated the victory in the European Champions League, therefore becoming the record-breaker in the history of the Soviet and Russian table tennis and the owner of the most prestigious award of the Old World. The prize taken in the 2012 Gazprom European Super Cup tournament is the fourth trophy added to the “medal bank” of the outgoing year.
“We’ve witnessed top-class table tennis. I’m not surprised that Fakel Gazproma was on top in the final. Gazprom helps tremendously in promoting our sport activity in the Orenburg Region,” underlined Stefano Bosi, President of the European Table Tennis Union.
“I am very satisfied with the game of our tennis players. The victory looked easy, but only at the first glance. Just a few mistakes in the crucial minutes of the match could become a turning point of the whole game,” said Sergey Ivanov, President of Fakel Gazproma and Director General of Gazprom Dobycha Orenburg.
