A European Shotokan Karate-Do Championship took place in Poland. 9 sportsmen from the Gazprom Transgaz Stavropol Shotokan Club participated in this event within the Russian national team. They won eight medals in team and individual combats.
A championship victory was the gold medal won by Evgeny Chentsov in the age category above 21 years. Russian sportsmen have not been winning in this category for 16 years. In 2004 Evgeny Chentsov won a silver medal during the European championship in Spain.
The gold medal among competitors 16 to 17 years old was brought to Gazprom Transgaz Stavropol by Islam Nagoev. He also won the bronze medal in team combats. Mkhitar Mkhitaryan became a silver medalist among the juniors (18–20 years old), Vladislav Ivanov – a bronze medalist. Alexey Zaitsev, Vladislav Ivanov and Mkhitar Mkhitaryan brought gold medals to the team in team combats.
Background
Gazprom Transgaz Stavropol is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom. The company maintains the line pipes passing through 10 Russian constituents and conveying some 70 billion cubic meters of gas per year. The gas pipelines length exceeds 7,900 kilometers.
The Gazprom Transgaz Stavropol Shotokan Club was established in 1998. An irreplaceable head of the club is Viktor Mashchenko, the senior coach of Shotokan karate-do national team.
Evgeny Chentsov has been training the Gazprom Transgaz Stavropol Shotokan Club since its establishment. During this period he has repeatedly become a winner and medalist of prestigious international and national tournaments.
