On May 22 the Super Final of the National Table Tennis Championship in Yekaterinburg among the Premier League men’s teams came to an end. The gold medals and the prizes of the national eight-month tennis marathon were awarded among four clubs that achieved the best results in the preliminary round.
The winner of the Russian championship was the Gazprom Torch table tennis club (Orenburg) that clinched a 4:1 win over Victoria (Moscow) and beat the local UMMC (Urals Mining and Metallurgical Company), 4:3 and 4:1, in the finals. The latter club is comprised of reputed legionnaires with Chinese Chen Ki, the two-time Olympic champion, as the leader.
The Orenburg club is represented by Vladimir Samsonov, Honored Master of Sports; Alexey Smirnov, Master of Sports of International Level; Fyodor Kuzmin and Dmitry Ovcharov.
On May 27 at 5:00 pm Gazprom Torch will play in the European Champions League Final with German Borussia Dusseldorf.
Background
The Gazprom Torch table tennis club (Orenburg) was set up on October 20, 2001. It is the fourth-time winner and the two-time holder of the Russian Cup and holder of the 2010 European Cup, finalist of the 2011 European Champions League. The Club is sponsored by Gazprom, Gazprombank and Sogaz Insurance Group.
