Reindeer Herder’s Day in Evenkia

Last weekend, on March 26, the settlement of Surinda of the Evenk Municipal District (Evenkia) hosted the traditional celebrations dedicated to the Reindeer Herder’s Day, a most cheerful and unique holiday of peoples of the North. The holiday brought together representatives from the regional legislative authorities, administrative and municipal heads, top managers from oil and gas companies, reindeer herder teams and citizens of Evenkia. 

As usual, the Gazprom dobycha Krasnoyarsk delegation led by Alexey Davydov, Director General for Economics arrived to greet the celebrating people. In his greeting speech Alexey Davydov noted, “It’s a pleasure to see nowadays the revival of traditional reindeer herding as the basic activity of Northern indigenous minorities and its great significance for the national culture preservation. We are shaping good partnership relations with your region making a strong contribution to its socioeconomic development. Our goal is to enable the Evenks to preserve and develop their traditional activities as well as to improve the living conditions in the region” .

Pyotr Suvorov, Head of the Evenk Municipal District noted the importance of such support for the Evenks. “Of course we receive federal and regional allocations, but the assistance of oil and gas companies in developing the settlements, supporting the reindeer herding and traditional activities in Evenkia is very significant and means a lot to us”, – he noted. 

After summarizing the performance in 2010, the best reindeer herder teams received incentive awards from gasmen: a Kamaz truck, snowmobiles, petrol-fired generators and outboard motors,the total of 20 units of machinery and equipment.
