Holland hosted the European Shotokan Karate-do championship. Taking part in the championship as part of Russian national team were 13 sportsmen from Gazprom transgaz Stavropol – Shotokan club. This time it was the most successful championship for the company’s karatekas throughout the years of their participation. In the command and individual combats as well as in the formal complex of exercises (kata) the sportsmen won seven gold and four bronze medals.
Two sportsmen won several medals at once. Vasily Blinov won a gold medal in two kata age groups – 16 and 17 years old. Alexander Brykalov won bronze among the 13-year-old participants of the championship in the individual and command combats. Trying to win, the club’s sportsmen were forced to overcome some difficulties. Dmitry Cherkashin (14 years old) took part in all the combats and won a gold medal despite his trauma.
Background
Gazprom transgaz Stavropol is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Gazprom. The linear part of gas mains maintained by the company is passing through 10 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The annual volumes of gas transmission are about 70 billion of cubic meters. The length of gas pipelines is over 7,900 kilometers.
Gazprom transgaz Stavropol – Shotokan club was founded in 1998. Victor Mashchenko, Senior Coach of the Russian national Shotokan Karate-do team is a constant leader of the club. The sportsmen of the company participate in the European championship since 2008 and every year they win medals.
